Automotive anti-freeze does more than keep your engine cool. It also lubricates, stops corrosion and keeps the fluid from freezing in the winter. The ability to inhibit corrosion is what keeps the radiator, thermostat and water pump in good condition. Each time you add water you dilute the anti-corrosion capability. When corrosion starts it makes the cooling fluid degrade even faster.

You can change your automobile’s coolant yourself. It is one of the easiest automotive maintenance tasks. The basic steps are as follows:

1. Allow your engine to cool before starting. If you work while the engine is hot you might get burned. Attempting to drain your system while hot could cause a dangerous steam release that will burn you.

2. All cooling systems have a drain plug (petcock). It’s located at the lowest part of the radiator. It will have a nylon or metal t-bar valve that you can turn counter clockwise to open. The drain plug may be hidden behind a trap door, so consult your repair manual if you can’t locate the drain.
